How to Be a Lazy Writer and Still Get Work Done

Do you identify as a “lazy writer”?

Do you lose hours to scrolling when you should be writing or otherwise being a productive member of society? If that’s your journey (like it is mine), then these 4 tips are for you.

Have an external motivator

I don’t know about you, but it’s hard for me to finish a script if there’s no one waiting for it. If you’re struggling to get a script done, try creating an external motivator like a writing group waiting to read your script, or a submission date for a film festival. Now, not only do you have a deadline, you have more than just willpower motivating you to finish.

Break the work up into bits

If you’re anything like me, and having a big project (like an entire screenplay) looming over your head puts you in a total freeze state, then try breaking it up into small pieces. Now that you have a deadline, you can work backwards and get a few pages done everyday before it’s time to turn in your project.

Get On Your Own Side

I used to beat myself up A LOT for being lazy. I don’t know about you, but negative self-talk has never once proved to be an effective motivator for me. If anything, it just made working harder. It’s time to try something new- self-compassion. The next time you find yourself in a spiral of negativity, give yourself some understanding. Maybe there’s an unmet need that requires addressing before you can work.

Notice When You’re “On”

The more you understand yourself, the more you’ll notice when you’re naturally at your most creative. Build your writing routine around that and nothing else.

Get out there. Get to work.
